Klaus hesitates. He rolls his shoulders back and looks at his brother. He cracks a grin, Luther’s somber face makes him queasy.
“Y’know One-sy dearest,” he says with a breezy tone. “It’s dark out and with all the freaky rain, well... The odds of you surviving a horror movie are the lowest. I’ve come to protect you!”
Luther scowls.
Time for some truth then. Klaus drops the grin.
“I can't sleep,” he admits. “There’s someone in my room. Several someones actually.” He musters up an airy smile, waves his hand around a bit. “Nasty bunch, really.”

Oh my god, I didn't know there were any copies of this left on the internet. For those who don't know, this is like. This is a foundational text of hockey RPF. This is from before hockey RPF was really a thing even. It's from the mid-aughts and wasn't posted to a fanfiction website. Instead, OP dropped this insane RPF manifesto onto a normal ass hockey fan forum (which no longer exists) then deleted their account like two days later. Just handed this to a bunch of jocks and hockey bros and dipped. Legendary shit. Like, I don't think this kid even knew what fanfiction was, the fucking hand of god just compelled him to write about being an MLH player's sex slave and show it to the world. I pray every day that this insane child actually made it to the MLH and got to meet Scott Hunter.
So maybe Shane had a little crush on Scott Hunter in his younger years. So maybe he anonymously posted online about it once. So maybe it had become an internet legend and a running joke in the MLH.

The first time Shane had sensed it, they’d been three goals up, winning a game they didn’t really deserve to win.
‘Rozanov - ‘ something on his face must have given away how truly terrible he feels, because Hollander is stepping closer, a look of concern etched over his features. He bites back his words - Ilya sways, just barely, dizzy all of a sudden - and Hollander gets out ‘Ilya,’ the name low and far too intent. Hollander smells worried, rain-charcoal-loam, a thick miasma.
Ilya chokes back a noise of pain as his stomach cramps, deep pain low in his pelvis - another wave of heat flushes over his cheeks - and it’s then that he feels the first trickle of slick and realizes, horribly and suddenly, what must impossibly be happening. What has been happening.
He's going into heat.

"There's no point in coming out, for me." Hollander replies, curt, in a manner that felt very much like a 'drop it' and 'discussion over'. Whatever Shane's had in his mouth tastes like ash, now, and he looks up to see his older counterpart's expression fall; his trusted look of careful neutrality revealing something vulnerable and aged. It's the expression he has, Ilya would say, when something hurts him unexpectedly, face unable to mask the pain that spreads through him like a poison. "The people who matter to me know, and that's it. I keep my personal life and professional life separate."
"Oh. Right, of course.”
Or: A post-Boxing Day fight Shane winds up meeting a version himself, two decades into the future.

Summary
Despite what the media likes to believe, Ilya has never hated Shane. They’ve been obscenely competitive on the ice and angry with each other off of it, but he doesn’t think he’s even capable of truly hating Shane Hollander.
Last night, though, something ugly and uncomfortably close to that woke in him. He knows that on some level, Shane has to know what Ilya has sacrificed. He wasn’t trying to hurt Ilya. He never would.
After the Boxing Day fight, Ilya disappears.

Or: Ilya Rozanov is sure he's being catfished- why would the real Shane Hollander be on Grindr, talking to random university of Ottawa students? But the more he talks to Wayne, the more he starts to like him, and the more he wishes Wayne would just come clean so they can finally be together.
