Rio had heard the tales. Stories of her kind forsaking their own for another. Merfolk (mainly maids, never men) stepping out of the ocean, never to be seen again.
Her mother had regaled her with such tales as a child, waxing poetic about young maids rising to the surface, their eyes falling upon a sail ship and the bounty of men it contained. Men with two legs, strong arms and a promise of adventure. Human men. Not of this world.
Rio couldn't fathom it.

Agatha frowns, “My husband?”
The steward tilts his head in confusion, but as soon as he opens his mouth to reply, the door to the train car opens and Rio strides in with her chaotic elegance. She unapologetically sits in front of her.
“How’s the fish done?” Rio asks, without looking up from the menu.“Baked, sir.” the steward politely answers.
“Sir?” Agatha scoffs, bewildered.
“People tend to see me as they wish.” Death carelessly explains, eyes never leaving the page. “I’ll have the salad and my wife will take the steak, will you not, dear?”
Agatha is blanking again, she was indeed going for the steak, “Fish, thank you.”
“But you so prefer something bloody,” Rio grins at her, all teeth of course.

"I want you to date Instagram's favorite baker for PR." Jen corrected her with the patience of an elementary school teacher. "Think about it, Aggs! Rio needs to officially come out and get rid of the tradwife rumors. You need relatability points with the public to promote your new book. It makes total sense. Two birds, one stone and all that."
