    “Hello?” Ilya whispered into the phone. Muffled sounds were coming through the small speakers, but he couldn’t pick anything out. He muted the TV and turned the volume on his phone as high as it would go, then pressed his ear against the speaker. There was a man’s voice echoing, but it wasn’t Shane.

    Shane’s bye week lasts about twelve seconds before it turns into fever-fuelled melodrama and 1,187 unread messages ranging from “I’m dying” to “your backhand was trash.” Ilya loses a game, hides in an airport alcove, and goes full worried boyfriend, praying to get to Shane as quickly as humanly possible, and counting the kilometres from Ottawa to Montreal while keeping it quiet from the team.

    Then it’s Nurse Ilya time: cool cloths, small sips, soft Russian endearments, and the clingiest naps known to man until the fever finally breaks and they know it's going to be okay.
