Summary
Buck makes Eddie feel hopeful. He makes him forget himself. He makes him think that there’s a slither of possibility in which Eddie can give everything, can hand over every part of himself in exchange for every part of Buck. It’s a dizzying experience, to doubt yourself so completely and then with a flash of Buck’s smile, want to try, try to throw caution to the wind because Buck would make it so good, easier than anything has ever been before.
or; eddie diaz moves into buck's house post stabbing. eddie drinks various fun, juice-adjacent drinks. eddie wants, wants, wants.

Summary
“Alright,” Eddie shrugs, laissez-faire. He pulls Buck’s plate to the center of the table; pushes his own forward in kind. Then he begins a drawn-out circus routine of plucking an olive at a time up and out of the bowl and plopping them onto their respective dishes, one by one.
The delicate, repetitive movement of Eddie’s pinched fingers reminds Buck of picking the petals off of flowers. He loves me. He loves me not. He love—
An olive hits him square in the forehead.
“There,” Eddie says, resolute, as the pitted projectile tumbles to the ground at Buck’s feet. “Equal treatment.”
Or: Buck, Eddie, and the olive theory. Well, in theory.

“Hey, Diaz? Take it from someone who’s been there — it’s not as scary as you think it’ll be.”
Eddie frowns. He glances at Buck, as if Buck has any idea what Tommy is talking about. “What’s not?”
“I like to think I’m uniquely positioned to say it’s worth it.”
Or, Buck is not in love with his best friend, and Eddie is super straight. For sure. Definitely.

Summary
"Maddie." Eddie’s fear matches her own when they meet each other’s eyes again. “You gotta get out. We don’t have time…”
“I’m not leaving you.”
“What about Jee, Maddie?” Eddie grabs it like the steel frame in his side and jams it straight through her heart. “Who’d you rather leave? Me or her?”
For a moment, she thinks of how simple it would be. How badly she wants to get out. To remove the danger, to remove the possibility of leaving Jee, again, of leaving Chimney again. She could get out of the car. She could survive this.
Some part of her wants to, so bad, but she’s staring at Eddie, and thinking of Buck’s shaking hands after he got shot, thinking of Eddie spinning Christopher at the fire station, thinking of all the things this world has to lose if it loses Eddie Diaz. Thinking of all the things her brother would lose.
Thinking of all the things she would lose.

Summary
He wakes up with Eddie's arm thrown over his waist.
There's a pit in his stomach as soon as he opens his eyes, because the alarm is on again, the same radio station, the same song. The sunlight streaming into the room is buttery-soft, brand new because it's early. The alarm is ringing so they can take Chris to school. And—
He reaches out for the bedside table on his side of the bed they share, clumsily unplugs his phone one-handed. The screen lights up to a familiar wallpaper, and it's right there, just above the top of Buck's head: Wednesday.

Summary
Christopher has always secretly loved when people mistook Buck for his dad. He never said it out loud. Not to his dad and definitely not to anyone else.
But every time someone smiled at them at the zoo and said “Your son is adorable,” or a teacher assumed Buck was Mr Diaz, Buck automatically corrected people with a soft, “Actually, I’m…” before Chris could pretend for a second longer.
Christopher loved it. Because Buck chose him. Every single day. He was his Buck.

Summary
Buck's shaking his head before he can think about it. "Don't say that."
"Why not?"
"Because he's not yours," Buck finally snapped. It was a low blow. Such a low blow, especially after his own relationship with Chris for the last few years. "He's not yours, so you can't love him."
Eddie's expression rapidly shifted across a spectrum of emotions. From the previously crazed look, to shocked, pained, distraught, angry, before finally landing back on the same cold expression he wore on shift.
"That never stopped you from loving Christopher. Or did that change when you got your own child? What? You only loved him because you thought you'd never actually get to have a child of your own?"Bookmarked by itsetta

Summary
“He’s not,” Christopher interrupted after he swallowed, his eyebrows furrowed, “that’s not- no. Bucks not my uncle.”
His abuela waved a dismissive hand, “Oh, of course not, I know that. Isn’t that a thing you young ones do? Refer to your parents' close friends as aunts or uncles?”
And here’s the thing, yes. He refers to Hen and Karen as his aunties. He’s never blinked at that. He routinely tells people that he and Denny are basically cousins.
Sure, he even calls Maddie and Chim his aunt and uncle without a second thought, but that’s because - well, that’s because..
“He’s not my uncle,” Christopher repeated, “He’s my other dad.”

Summary
He looks back at Eddie and Eddie blinks at him like he knows. “What the hell? Fine,” Buck says, throwing a hand into the air and letting it fall to slap against his thigh. “Family trip to Hershey.”
Chris cheers and Eddie grins, like he’s won and hasn’t just signed up to carry boxes around and watch two people he barely knows and probably won’t be particularly welcoming, argue over furniture. He leans in to pepper kisses on Buck’s face, ending with an audible mwah to Buck’s birthmark.
“Don’t get ahead of yourself, Eddie. This isn’t going to be fun.”

Summary
Buck is spiraling. And when Buck spirals…
He leans forward fast, meeting Eddie in the middle and kissing him before he can think enough to convince himself not to. He pulls back just as quick, not even giving himself the chance to catalogue the feeling of Eddie’s lips on his own. Opening his eyes, he spares a look at the other man, and finds nothing but shock.
… He makes things worse.
“Fuck, Eddie I — I’m sorry. I — I’m gonna go.”

Summary
I’ve known Buck longer than you’ve been alive. He’s never taken you to the zoo or driven you to school or cooked you your favourite meal from scratch just because you asked. He’s never saved you from a tsunami. He’s never held you through nightmare after nightmare. He’s never come back from the dead because you told him to. He’s never sacrificed himself over and over and over to keep you safe. He’s never loved you like he loves me.
Logically, Christopher knows there’s a reason Buck hasn’t done any of these things for Theo. He hasn’t been given the chance to. Yet.

“Wait,” Hen chuckles, “You’re dating a latino single dad who has a kid Chris’s age?”
“A very handsome dad, who’s kid he saved from a watery disaster.” Ravi doesn't even try and hide his glee. Eddie blames Buck for torturing the man during his probie period, the karma is coming back to bite them both in this moment.
Hen’s chuckle turns into a cackle and Chim sucks in his lips in an obvious attempt to keep a straight face. It is not working. Buck for his part has been slowly turning an alarming shade of red for the past 30 seconds.

“I have no idea what’s going on.” He was embarrassed at the whiny note in his voice, but he couldn’t swallow it away. “I mean, the last thing I remember, I was telling my parents that I was leaving Texas. And then all of the sudden I wake up and it’s like—”

“What, uh,” Buck says, stopping at the top of the stairs. “What’s going on here?”
Sam steps around the island, grinning, “Hey, man! I made spaghetti to thank everyone for the warm welcome. Want me to make you a plate?”
Warm? Welcome?
For the guy who lied to a room full of bureaucrats who were ready to fire Chimney over it?
A clink of silverware hitting porcelain drags Buck’s confused glare back to the table, as four other sets of silverware follow after it. Like a wind chime of betrayal, ringing the bitter song of the 118’s treachery, their silverware sings with shame.
At least, that’s what it sounds like to Buck.

Summary
Now, at three in the morning, Buck felt like an accordion, bent at frequent intervals and sharp angles and he found himself questioning every memory he had of his early twenties. Had he really fit comfortably in the back seat once upon a time? Or had it always been cold and lonely and uncomfortable and those rougher edges of his memories were just sanded down by time and distance?
It was uncomfortable now. It was embarrassing now. Buck shivered, wrapping his arms around his bare arms and trying to scrunch down further against the seats. Away from view.
Early on in their friendship, Eddie finds Buck sleeping in the Jeep and takes him home.
