For a moment, he said nothing, his eyes still fixed on that middle distance. ‘… I can’t think of what to do.’
‘You will,’ Rose assured him.
He flinched a little. ‘… What if I don’t this time?’ he croaked.The Eternal Goddess of Life has been tortured into pieces, and only the Doctor’s family may be able to put her back together.
But the machine that destroyed Life nearly broke the Doctor beyond repair, leaving him permanently scarred in body and mind, while Lanwa left Rose trapped in the aftermath of a body used to enslave, mutilate and kill innocent people. He no longer knows whether he can save anyone. She no longer always feels that her body belongs to her.
At the Eternals’ request, the Doctor and his family must cross a universe bereft of life with no plan and no way home, gathering the scattered fragments before the consequences reach every living thing in the real universe.

As the universe looks for someone to blame for the atrocities Lanwa committed, another threat looms. A girl is missing. The Eternals are uneasy. The universe needs its Doctor back. But he’s not sure he has anything left to give.
