Summary
Xie Lian rocks forward once, twice, feeling the starting tempo. Then his fingers finally press down on the opening chords. They ring softly in the still music shop. He leans forward into the crescendo of the opening phrase. It is his solo first. The piece grows louder until Xie Lian imagines the orchestra coming in with their melody, their moving line almost overpowering his. The music wraps up around him, pulling him in. He goes willingly.
Xie Lian finds a piano from his past, and, with the help of a piano technician, learns to reconnect with the music he thought he had left behind.

Summary
Zhuo Yichen is just shy of his fifteenth birthday when he first meets Zhao Yuanzhou and Li Lun. He feels every second of the six years of age between them as he stutters out his name. He catches sight of Li Lun’s slight smirk at the hiccup and looks down, shaking his hair over his reddening ears. A hand is proffered to him and he takes it. He thinks Zhao Yuanzhou notices the slight tremor in his fingertips because his eyes crinkle knowingly as they exchange introductions.
Zhao Yuanzhou’s smile is warm and gentle in the way Li Lun’s isn’t.Zhuo Yichen is young and wants someone he cannot have. Li Lun is older and provides a good enough distraction.

“So if you were Glenn’s kid in the other timeline,” Lark says slowly, lowering the rock she was about to heft into the lake. “Does that mean you were cool?”
Nicky flexes her fingers, looking for any remaining traces of dirt. Seeing none, she flips the switchblade she was using to clean under her nails closed. “Yeah, something like that.”
“Nice.” A pause. “Were we friends then?”
Nicky scoffs. She turns to find Lark looking up at her expectantly. Some of Lark’s curls that are too short to be held back in her messy braid form a soft halo around her head. It makes her look deceptively soft. “You and Sparrow were the same, so no. Definitely not.”
The kids--especially Nicky and Lark--must confront growing pains.

“Hey.” Normal’s voice is just a murmur. Hermie swivels his head to look at him. Normal’s face is turned towards him, and some of his hair has fallen across his eyes. Hermie’s hand comes up and brushes it back. Normal catches his hand gently and holds it. “If you’re tired, I can let you sleep.” He starts to shift as if he’s preparing to leave. Hermie’s hand tightens around Normal’s.
“You can stay.” Hermie’s not sure what he’s offering. After searching Hermie’s face for a moment, Normal nods minutely. Normal twists his hand around to link their fingers together.
“I’ll be here,” he whispers. Hermie’s eyes drift shut.
Life always finds a way to leave Hermie behind, until he meets Normal.

Lark shook his head. Even when he was drunk, he didn’t like looking at it. Now that he knew what the Doodler was, he was paranoid that if he looked for too long, the Doodler would look back. And the Doodler would know him.
Lark tells Nicky what he saw on the throne in the Church of the Doodler, and things don't get better.
