She watches Joe touch Shane’s arm, and Shane pausing, leaning in as Joe explains something he’s doing with his skate, pointing down at his foot and using Shane for balance as he demonstrates. Does Joe have a crush on her son? Her proud mother’s heart says How could he not? Her sweet, handsome boy. She hopes Shane would be polite about it.
Then Joe lets go of Shane’s arm and skates off, and Shane just stands there watching him for a few moments. Her heart does an odd jump. What if Shane liked him back?

Great story of a frustrating but sympathetic Yuna who is mostly trying her best but just doesn't have it in her to create an environment where Shane feels comfortable coming out to her, though she loves him enough that she supports him immediately once he does.
I like that this story explains where the line, "I think we thought you might be gay," fits into Yuna's relationship with Shane since that line has always made me angry. This is a wonderful Yuna POV that explains why she's burying her head in the sand while she thinks she's doing the best thing for Shane. It's truly not out of malice, it's just being straight in a heteronormative world and letting yourself be buoyed along and hoping you'll never have to confront anything that's atypical of your world or threatens your comfort.

Nice version of this trope of Ilya and Shane being accidentally outed when Ilya visits Shane in the hospital. I've stopped reading them mostly, but this was one of the first I read, and it's a really nice take.

“We had a wedding this weekend, Miss Emma! With Uncle Shane,” Ruby Pike announces during Monday morning circle time. Miss Emma nods and tries to play it cool. It was exciting when the Pike twins mentioned Uncle Shane. Like he was just their dad’s totally normal BFF instead of the greatest hockey player Canada had seen in two decades. But she wasn’t going to fangirl in front of the kids.
“Well, it was a pretend wedding—” Ruby starts to clarify, but then Jade Pike interrupts her.
“Uncle Ilya said if you do the rings it’s a real wedding.”
Miss Emma’s eyebrows shoot up into her hairline. Uncle…Ilya? As in…
“Uncle Ilya said the rings and kiss made it real so we should tell Daddy to get him and Uncle Shane a very, VERY expensive gift,” Jade continues.
There’s that name again. Uncle Ilya. In the same breath as Uncle Shane. With the word kiss. That couldn’t be right…

The next puck drop was with Ilya and Hollander across from each other. Shane was focused and unaffected by Ilya’s presence, which was unacceptable. Shane didn't get to act like this was a normal day.
"Going to run away again." Ilya taunted letting himself be bitter, "Maybe pick up some girl to take home?"
Hollander tilted his head like Ilya was the one being strange.
"No? I'm married, dude."
The puck dropped, but Ilya didn't move, the world a blur around him
