“Lomedy,” Flame gasps, gathering him up in his arms and then feeling his heart drop at how limp and lifeless and cold his best friend is. Glassy golden eyes shift slightly to land on him and that transforms the situation from incomprehensible, impossible agony to simply very very bad.
“Whuh…?” Lomedy mutters. What a beautiful, awful sound. What a stupid thing for him to say. First thing in months; first thing in fifteen, twenty battles of this traitor standing at Lettuce’s side in white-and-gold like a fucking trophy, dead silent except for his blank, mindless stare—and he gets "whuh."

(Post-canon fic where a grieving Avery has had a recurring and continuous dream ever since New Year's. Eventually, he finds who he hopes truly is Derek. I made this because (1) I want to see them bonding, (2) Avery deserves to get to know Derek more, and (3) I have an ending in mind that won't teleport me to a rooftop ledge. I did my best to make it seem like a plausible post-canon sequence of events. The exposition may seem a bit lengthy, but I hope you'll find it worth it.)
