Summary
Serena has taken a sabbatical after the death of her daughter, Elinor, and is working at a vineyard in the Rhône Valley when she encounters Dr. Berenice Wolfe, a locum obs-gynae specialist working in the only hospital in her small town. Serena becomes her patient, but the relationship starts to develop in a different direction as they find it hard to avoid one another. Six years after Bernie leaves Jason's wedding party in Albie's she is working for MSF in Syria and is caught up in an explosion. She has had no contact with Serena for those six years, but they are always in each other's thoughts. The explosion brings Bernie's overseas medical career to an abrupt end, and while she recuperates, she enlists Charlotte's help in trying to recruit Serena for a project she has been preparing in advance of her return to the UK. Serena is understandably wary, but her relief at Bernie's survival brings the women back into each other's orbit. Serena is about to get a huge surprise - and a whole new lease of life!

This continues the story of Bernie and Serena two years after True Love Is So Rare when, having finally found each other after Serena's sabbatical, they settled in Ho Chi Minh City (aka Saigon), Vietnam, to work for the new French International Hospital, and got married in January 2018. Now the pandemic is sweeping across Europe from Asia and Serena feels she must go home. Bernie agrees to follow, but for the past year she has been working on Emergency Medical Teams all over Asia and can't join Serena immediately. This is the story of how they navigate and survive the pandemic, bringing the story up to the present day, and with more bumps and twists along the road.
