After a few quiet seconds, June pulls back to look at him, expression sympathetic. “Hey, how are you holding up? You look exhausted, Henry.”
Henry smiles sheepishly at her. “I’m doing my best, June. Thank you so much for coming over. I know it’s a long trip.”
“Hey, we said to call when you want us. Everyone’s still by the phone waiting for the invite.”
“I know, he just…he hasn’t really been up for company.”
June sighs softly. “I noticed at the hospital he didn’t seem…well, he wasn’t how I expected him to be. It’s getting worse?”
“Yes. He just won’t talk to me about it.”
Alex realizes, with a bitter taste filling his mouth, that they’re talking about him.

Summary
He’s not upset when Alex makes the mistake of bringing up Nathan over dinner, emboldened by the wine and still a little bitter about how he’d treated Henry at the Christmas party. It makes Henry pause the fork on its way to his mouth, like he’s surprised Alex had even noticed.
“It wouldn’t do either of us any good to be upset about that,” Henry tells him bluntly. “He’s hardly touched me in two years since he began fucking the landscaper. Would you care for dessert?”
Alex wipes his mouth with his napkin and leans back in his chair, his blood simmering again.
“Rather get the check, I think.”
Henry says “Very well,” with all of the elegance of someone they both know is about to be thoroughly taken apart, pays the bill, and leads Alex up to his hotel room.
