    Summary

He has roughly fifteen minutes of soccer left.

He could just sit here and watch the game like a normal person.

    Or.

“It’s actually been kind of a rough year for them,” he says, letting his voice drop a little. Sun Hat Lady immediately leans in closer. “Like, they almost didn’t make it.”

“Oh no,” she breathes. “Oh, honey.”

“Yeah, it was… I mean, I don’t want to get into it.” He absolutely wants to get into it. “But basically, Theo— my little brother, number seven, the one who keeps—”

A whistle blows. Theo’s committed another foul. This one might actually be assault — Chris isn’t a legal expert but Theo basically used that kid as a speed bump.

“—doing that. So, Theo wasn’t planned. And when my dad, the blonde one, told my other dad, it was like…” Chris exhales wearily, having seen too much. “They were struggling. Communication issues. You know how it is.”

Sun Hat Lady nods gravely. She knows how it is.

    Or,
Sometimes you have to make up a story and involve some soccer moms to get your stupid dad and his stupid best friend to kiss.

    Summary

Eddie’s throat tightened. He hadn’t expected this—not now, not after the months of careful, delicate work to rebuild their relationship. “Chris, you don’t have to apologize. You had every right to be upset. I messed up, big time.”
“But you didn’t mess up like that,” Chris blurted out.
Eddie froze, completely thrown. “Like what? What do you mean?”
Chris hesitated again, then let out a sigh, as if bracing himself. “Like Buck’s parents. I was just talking to him, and, Dad… they’re awful. Did you know they told him Santa wasn’t real when he was three? Like, straight-up said it to his face! And that’s not even the worst part. They barely cared about Christmas at all, or him. It was Maddie who tried to make it special, and they just ruined it.”

    Summary

"'I just need you to take a step back, just for a little bit. It’s not permanent; it’s just until Ana and I can get our feet under us, you know?” Eddie’s eyes were worried but his smile was hopeful. Buck felt sick.

Eddie wanted him to step back, to leave. He was around too much; in their space too much; in their lives too much; always too much. God, Buck really must have exhausted them until Eddie had had enough; he couldn’t tolerate Buck anymore. Buck had to hand it to him; he’d lasted longer than anyone, besides Maddie. Maybe he should tell him that. The last man standing, finally bowing in defeat."

    Summary

He knows he could have called Maddie and she would have been there, though the memory of her disappointment last time stopped him. As for everyone else—even if he weren’t prohibited from talking to them by his lawyer, Buck doubts anyone would have come. The last time they talked was when they ran into each other in the grocery store a week back, and, since Buck is not eager for a repeat of that interaction, he doesn’t even consider calling anyone in to hold his hand for what is, he tells himself, probably just another little blip on his road back to the 118.

He is able to convince himself of this up until the moment Dr. Gutierrez walks into his room and says, “Well, Evan, you just can’t seem to do anything the easy way, can you?”

Because, as it turns out, there is a circumstance under which a tiny clot that doesn’t cause you to vomit blood in front of all of your friends and family is worse than three big ones that do: that circumstance is called ‘being on blood thinners.’
    ***
In the midst of the lawsuit, Buck is diagnosed with cancer. Dropping the lawsuit is easy. Finding forgiveness, less so.

    Summary

Buck and Eddie have been dating for 2 years, and Buck couldn't be happier. He felt secure and happy, he felt like he finally belonged. He's found the family he has always wanted to find. He found his home. Frankly, yes, he's let his guard down.

That might be the reason why it hit him so unexpectedly when he found the plane tickets. And suddenly, everything seemed to rock back into place.

Eddie was going to leave him. He was going to pack his things, take Chris and leave Buck behind. Everybody seemed to, eventually.
