A distress signal gets broadcast into the New Avengers Tower, and weirdly, its timestamp reads 1949. Yelena thinks nothing of it until she reports it to Bucky, who thoroughly loses his shit. And so this ragtag dysfunctional team’s first mission ends up being to New York City, 1949 to save Steve Rogers from one incredible returning-the-Infinity-Stones mission fuck-up. Or, in other words, to get Bucky his boyfriend back.

“That’s bullshit.” It’s slightly slurred, and he’s a little dizzy when he says it.“Steve’s good at everything. Anyone’d be lucky to kiss him.”
(or: Bucky is very competent and is doing a pretty great job at just about everything — except handling his feelings for Steve. He's doing a terrible job at that. It's a problem.)

The Asset is sent back in time to kill Steve Rogers before he becomes Captain America in order to erase him from history. Bucky’s frown deepened as he stared down at Steve, his gaze shifting over his face. He looked Steve over one more time, his frown deepening as he scanned the damage. “Where’s it hurt?”
Steve just shrugged again, trying to brush it off as if none of this mattered. “It doesn’t hurt,” lip quirking up. “I’ve never gotten hurt in my life, Buck.”
Bucky gently pressed him against the wall by his hip, crowding him in. Steve winced at the movement, and Bucky released him. “Sure,” he said flatly. “You look great, under all that blood and that new black eye.”
