Summary
The harbor was still silent at this early hour. Lune stood out on the dock, the waves showering her with their salty spray as she looked out across the vast body of water. This was what she had done every single day since her parents' expedition had departed, that morning after the Paintress had fixed the number 46 on the Monolith.
Fragments from Lune's life.

Summary
Maelle watches from her spot on the couch, somewhere between amused and confused. "What are you doing?" She asks at last.
He pokes his head out of the makeshift den. "Making a pillow fort."
"A what?"(Maelle is having trouble sleeping and refuses to talk about it. Gustave decides to take an unorthodox approach.)

Summary
“Alicia made an effort to save the gardens in my absence, but—” bitterness seeped into her voice. “ —the fire took almost everything.”
“A recurring theme in our life.”
Something flinty glittered in her eyes. “What do you want, Renoir? You’ve come to make some grand gesture, no doubt—offer to buy new flowers, replant the glasshouse. To what end?”
He might have had an answer for her once. Now, he was too tired. They’d spent sixty-seven years at war within the Canvas, only for the battle to spill into reality. Renoir shrugged. “Would you believe me if I said I do not know?”

Summary
From an outsider's perspective, Verso and Monoco's relationship is a little strange, and not only because a decades long relationship is like a fairy-tale for Lumièrans.
Lune watches and wonders about their secrets. Sciel tries not to be jealous. Mathilde wonders if she should call the authorities. Ophelie just thinks they're cute.

Summary
“Could you play for me?” she asks one evening, catching him alone in one of the rooftop gardens. “Please. Like in the camp, remember? Just this one time.”
He wants to say no, but — this feels different. He looks at her, pale in the dim light of the lanterns, and sees it immediately — the outline of the paint covering her face almost completely.
“You’re dying.”
She doesn’t deny it.
Or: Maelle and Verso have a chat decades after defeating the Paintress.

Summary
Monoco sighs. There are no marks on his body, of course, but he can see — the bloodstains on the ropes, the long-burned campfire with an iron rod lying in it. The gag, not compatible with a real interrogation. Most importantly — Verso’s evasiveness; barely hidden fear in the pale eyes that refuse to look up.
“Questions”. Sure.
He finishes with most of the ropes, feeling relief that it’s almost over — and stops, trying to comprehend what he is looking at.
Or: Monoco finds Verso after a rough encounter with an expedition. Freeing him turns out to be more complicated than any of them was ready for.

Summary
It happens in the middle of a fight.
The Nevron is huge—six-legged, beetle-backed, with a mouth full of shimmering teeth and a long, scorpion-like tail that sparks with Chromatic energy. They’re used to weird side effects by now, but this one is especially weird. It unleashes a pulse of light right before it dies, like a dying star exploding in miniature. They all shield their eyes—
—and when they lower their arms, Maelle is gone.
Gustave is the first to notice. “Where’s Maelle?!”
“I thought she was behind me!” Sciel shouts, scanning the ridge.
“Maelle!” Lune calls. “Answer us!”
Then: a sound.
A squawk.
A cry.
Sciel turns toward the source and drops her scythe. It lands in a clatter, dissolving into flickering light.
“…Oh. My. God.”

Summary
“I need you to calm down,” says his father’s voice, steady and deep and soothing. “Listen to me, son. I need you to calm down and let your chroma do the work. Do you hear me? Don’t fight it. Let it heal you.” A pause. “Let her heal you.”
The words reach him as if through a thick layer of water. Verso tries to follow the instructions — to calm down, how is he supposed to calm down when there is a hole in his chest?! — and fails at that, the only result another wheezing sound — a wordless plea for all of this to stop.
He’d begged his father if he could — if he had the voice. He’d begged him to make it stop.
Or: 5 times Renoir told Verso to let his wounds heal and the 1 time Verso didn't listen.

Summary
“I want to die.”
That gets his attention — Gustave’s eyes fly wide open, and he takes a step back. Like Verso is a lunatic who is better to be avoided. “I beg your pardon?”
“I want to die,” Verso repeats. “And I can’t do it on my own. You’re one of the smartest men in Lumière, you’re good with chroma. I need your help.”
Or: Verso is trying to find a way out. Gustave helps.

Summary
“Wait! Verso, damn it, wait, what-”
Fingers close around his wrist. He freezes, paralyzed; his arms are held down again, stripping him of the ability to defend himself, and a familiar-unfamiliar voice is ringing in his ears, and he is tugged and turned around, and soon the bruises on his wrists are going to be the least of his problems, because… because…
“Verso. Verso, look at me. Hey, look at me.”
Or: Maelle brings back a certain someone from Verso's past. Things do not go well, and Verso ends up on the doorstep of the only person in Lumière who makes him feel safe.

Summary
Aline Dessendre breaks on a dark and stormy night.
Another version of her, a younger one, one who didn’t die with her son, would’ve called it melodramatic; reflective of those dour and dreary English writers she so disparaged. This Aline hasn't the energy to care.
-
The world breaks on a sunny and pleasant day. Every day has been sunny and pleasant thus far; Verso doesn't know how many of them there were. Which memories are his and which are His.
Aline Dessendre, once again, creates life.
Written for day 2 of Verso Hell Week: Storm.

“I’m not Renoir,” the stranger croaked.
“No, no. I know. I’ve seen photos in the archives. You’re too young. But he had lieutenants. All the early expeditions did. Kay, Simon, Minot… and his son.”
Outside the cave, a strange bird trilled. Sunlight striped the stone floor.

Summary
Renoir leaned more heavily on his cane, drifting, almost dream-like, towards the music’s source. He recognized this particular record. It’d been Verso's final birthday gift to his mother, a recording of his own design. His son’s words haunted him: in case his travels took him away from the manor.
He half-expected to find his wife slumped in one of the armchairs, expression faraway, tinged with all the melancholy that so often categorized her moods these days. The delicate swish of fabric was wholly unexpected. Renoir lingered in the doorway, watching Aline lead their youngest across the floor in a slow waltz.

Summary
Nothing had changed since Clea's parents returned from the Canvas. Verso was still buried and unavenged. The Writers still openly revelled in their victory.
What had Renoir called it? Her solitary war? She would wage it regardless of their involvement.

Summary
Alicia glances up at his approach. She says nothing, even as she shuffles to make room for him. Renoir settles with a sigh, folding his hands over his cane’s handle. He tips his head towards the book in her lap. “I used to think no one could ever manage the entirety of our family library. You may yet accomplish the task, ma petite.”
She flushes. “I don’t read that much, Papa.”
(Five times Renoir reads to Alicia across the years, including the first and last).

Summary
It’s her own chroma reaching out to her, sweet and cool, scented with smoke and sweat. Aline lifts her head. Verso stares back—her beautiful boy, caked in blood, white petals fluttering around his mangled form. He smiles. All the clumsy stitching across her heart—her desperate attempts to self-soothe, to heal, to pull herself back together—tear at the seams.
“Do you recognize me?” Verso whispers. The weight of more than a century hangs off his shoulders. It does nothing to touch the childish longing in his pale eyes, or the feverish, desperate way he clutches at her.
“Always." Aline cups his cheek. She strokes her thumb over the scar marring his face, a lone imperfection worn so proudly. “Verso.”
(Verso leaps free of the painting. After decades apart, he and Aline share a final conversation).

Summary
There is something odd and disquieting about the aftermath of great adventures.
In the absence of happily-ever-after, all that’s left is to pick up the pieces and pray for the best. Aline is home. Alicia is home. Neither will speak to him. Renoir does not push the matter. Clea keeps him busy enough, and he is too tired to force his suit with the family. In his heart, he knows someone will say something they regret. It is better to keep apart a while longer.
And he still has his memories. Decades of moments to fall back on, to rely on, while they heal.
Or: family moments before the fire, and copious amounts of Renoir/Aline snippets.
