Summary
It's been at least three years since Wylan, Inej, or Nina stepped foot on Ketterdam soil, so maybe they were naïve in thinking everything would be the same when they came back.
Inej was a powerful Captain now, but during this break from sailing, she wanted to open a new chapter with Kaz. Wylan, after coming back from fleeing to the Wandering Isles, was determined to make things right with Jesper and win him back. After Nina's time in Ravka, she wanted a break, and knew she could find comfort in her best friends.
Jesper and Kaz, both the Kings of the Barrel, knew this trip wouldn't go as well as the other three imagined, but no one was quite sure how wrong it was all going to go. By the end of it, is anyone even sure they're friends anymore, or were they just destined to be a quick match of a flame with one another? Strong when lit, but quick to burn out and crumble.

She stepped into the room; eyes almost immediately drawn to the stranger sitting in the old green armchair. He was dressed in all black, exactly as Kristina had said, cane resting in his leather covered, right hand. He was watching Alina in turn, expression cold and unreadable.
Alina felt scared of him, without knowing why. Something about his stare and all black clothes perhaps. He had a scar cutting down his face from above his left eyebrow to the top of his lip and a metal contraption on his right leg. The dark of the room seemed to settle in the sharp edges of his cheekbones and hollows of his eyes, as if the light from the candelabras could not touch him. Alina had the wild thought that death had come calling and had come for her specifically.

There was a man, dressed as an Oprichnik, who was limping. He was by himself, no partner in sight, and he was, for lack of a better term, looking rather shifty. He was walking with purpose, eyes scanning the corridor in front of him, as if searching for something in particular.
Aleksander took all of this in within a moment and knew he had found the agent planted by Zlatan.

Or that story where Jesper is discovered as a Durast and taken to the Little Palace. Kaz and Inej go to get him back, with Kaz disguised as an Oprichnik. Now if only the Black General would stop interfering in Kaz's rescue plans.
