    Summary

Pretty much what it says on the tin.

And what kind of adventure do you have on a train? Obviously you solve a murder!

Aline and Renoir Dessendre have retired from the Painter’s Council and relocated to the French Riviera, where they’ve planned a massive combined retirement and anniversary celebration. And all of their children, painted, in-law, and otherwise, are expected to attend.

But plans are derailed when a young woman is murdered on Gustave and Verso’s train south, and the unfinished Canvas traveling with her disappears.

Note: takes place in the universe established by the end of Une Vie a Vivre, but you don’t have to have read it first, the author’s note will have a run down of necessary background information.

    Summary

It is a truth universally acknowledged that a city built half upon the water and wholly upon its own ambition must, sooner or later, marry someone for the difference.

Lumière had been doing so for the better part of a century, and with a bride's practised composure. Where the land gave out—and in Lumière the land was forever giving out, shrugging its wharves into the sea as though ashamed of them—the councils arranged what the tide would not provide: an alliance here, a settlement there, a good name wed to a good harbour, and both, it was generally agreed, the better for it. The city took money in as it took the sea in, through locks and gates and a great deal of careful engineering, and it let very little of either back out again.

    Or:
The one where Verso is Mr Darcy, Gustave is Elizabeth Bennet, and Jane Austen probably has some questions for me.

    Summary

"It is not, Gustave, I am of sound mind." He tugged at Kostas' arm just a little firmer, smiling. "Now why don't you sit and tell me how come you wouldn't sell it?"

If there was one dark secret that Kostas would never divulge, it was that he didn't quite trust in the gods. He wasn't certain he believed in anything concrete, save perhaps the navigability of trade winds and the reliability of a well-kept ledger. His thirty-odd years had taught him that belief was not the point, most of the time. The point was always the gesture: a seed sown, a fire kindled, a body oriented toward something outside of itself. He sat back down.

Or: I used to roll my eyes at Verso's fuckass Latin name, so now he gets to be a Roman. And Gustave in turn is a Greek merchant! I'm neither of those, please don't kill me.

    Summary

Gustave lifts his eyes to his lips, plump with wine—wonders the taste of tonight's vintage—then farther up and there, Verso's eyes are a striking azure under moonlight.

"Well? What are you waiting for?" Verso taunts with a smirk. "Go on. Make my day."

Verso Dessendre is one of Paris' favorite sons and it's in character for him to extend an invitation to someone like Gustave to a simple evening with his friends.

The implication runs deeper and they're aware of it.
