After a harsh GUI meltdown caused by his own breakdown after his child's passing, his body shut down.
Falling into the forsaken realm, he is left with quite a bit of his own choice stripped away, as an 'unknown' virus has caused his own GUI to begin giving him commands, demanding a constant input of information on the personal lives of his fellow survivors, or sometimes even sabatoge.

A great source of despair draws Nightmare to an abandoned AU. There he finds an unfinished Sans with no name, no companions, no purpose, no world, and a soul. Nightmare gives him the option to get out of his abandoned, empty world. He accepts the offer but refuses to destroy anything or hurt people. Instead he finds another purpose. In return the Bad Sanses give him a home, companions, a life, and a name. They call him Ink.
Or: Before he can destroy his soul and enter the Doodle Sphere, Ink is recruited by Nightmare. He accepts his role as best he can, even if he sometimes feels like he is meant for something more.

“Holy shit..” Noli took a step closer. “Is that a..?”
“A baby?” 007n7 intervened, finishing Noli’s sentence. “Yeah. Yeah, it is. And not just any baby, it's..” 007n7 trailed off. “Just look at it.”
The baby stirred in its sleep, letting out a soft, muffled gurgle. Its skin was deep crimson, almost glowing in the dim light. Noli’s mouth was wide open. “Oh my goodness, it’s fucking red.” he whispered in disbelief.
“Thank you!” 007n7 said, throwing up his hands. “Finally, someone acknowledges the baby is red! I thought I was going insane.”
“Why is it red?!” Noli whisper-yelled, his voice cracked with disbelief as he flailed his arms like he could somehow fling the weirdness out of the room by force alone.
“You think I know?!” 007n7 shot back, hands gesturing wildly. “You think I just wander around campus planting red demon babies in cardboard boxes for funsies!?"
