"We've been pushing each other since we were in juniors," Will's voice rings out, bringing him back to the present, back to the roaring crowd at Rod Laver Arena. He looks at Macklin, who’s watching him from next to the tournament director, the runner-up plate glinting in his hands.
"There is no one else I would rather share this court with," Will continues into the microphone, his voice thick with emotion. “I can’t wait to share many more matches with you in the future. When it’s not me, I always hope it’s you.”
Macklin’s smile this time isn’t tired or forced. It’s wide, genuine, and filled with something else that only Will can name.

Sid doesn’t step any closer to him. “You waited for me.”
“Think maybe you’re hungry,” the man says. He takes another drag and blows smoke into the night sky. Sid’s transfixed by the long line of his neck when he tips his head back. “Think maybe you come eat with me.”
Sid sticks his hands in his pockets and shakes his head. “I don’t have dinner with guys that smoke.”
The man raises an eyebrow and drops the cigarette to the pavement. He puts it out with the toe of his shoe.
