Summary
She looks at him the way you look at a dying animal. Like he's a deer she crashed her car into, drawing in his final breaths on the blood-soaked asphalt.
He's too tired to feign surprise at seeing her. Perhaps he really did die tonight, he wonders. Maybe she's not his Mama at all, a psychopomp come to take him by the hand and guide him over to where he belongs.
"You're here again," he whispers. He wants to reach out and touch her, but he can't bring himself to move. He slowly realizes that what keeps stilling his hand is fear. She will disappear; he knows she will.
"You called for me," she says, and doesn't reach out either. "My sweet boy."
