Instead, Inej removes her fingers from Nina’s hair. At some point, her brown eyes drifted from Nina’s face to somewhere far off in the distance. It’s that same look Inej had at the ice court, when her bronze arms were covered in the cheap silks of Tante Heleen rather than the sturdy shirts she wore now.
“Can I braid your hair?” Inej asks softly, and Nina shivers. Inej has already given so much- has already comforted Nina through the nightmares, even let her stay in a room that was decidedly only enough space to fit one very small person. Still, she gives.

Wylan sucks in a breath, steeling himself and getting his order right in his head before opening the door. The sound of the door must have gotten Jesper’s attention, because he looks up from the machine behind the counter and waves.
“Wylan! Hey, you're back,” he says, grinning at Wylan as if he truly is happy to see him. “Nina, look–” he taps her on the shoulder as Wylan walks over.
Nina, who has just finished serving a customer, swats Jesper’s hand away lightly. “Yes, yes, I see him,” she says with an exasperated eyeroll, making eye contact with Wylan afterwards. She smiles at him. “Hey Wylan, what took you so long– I was stuck with only Jesper for conversation for like four days– it takes its toll on a person.”
Wylan, laughing at Jesper’s feigned offence, responds. “I’m sure he’s lovely company to have.”
“See! I am lovely.” he says to Nina, clearly proud of himself
