It was Charles who Monty put his arm around as the auditorium lights went dark. Jean couldn’t decide if this was a new pattern of behaviour, or if it was purely the stark contrast to their last theatre outing that had prompted her to take note. Monty had been a tactile person for as long as she’d known him, that wasn’t up for debate. But Charles relaxing into Monty’s arm rather than tensing beneath it was certainly a development.
Jean let herself be drawn back into the chatter as they walked to the underground station, hugging them both tightly before they waved her onto her train. Her smile fell apart as soon as she disappeared into the tunnel, wondering when their little trio had turned into one matching pair and Jean trailing behind.

“But the last few days, it-it’s been happening again. I fall asleep and I see you, but you’re not breathing and there’s blood everywhere and then I wake up and I have no idea what’s real and what’s not or where I am or where you are. I’m just so… so tired.” Charles finished with a heavy sigh, shoulders sagging and eyes glassy.
The feeling that they were too young to have such heavy burdens wasn’t exactly a new one, but it did feel more true in that moment than it ever had before. He tried, rather desperately, to think of something, anything, that would help ease that bone-deep tiredness he knew all too well, but he came up short. It wasn’t fair, Charles always seemed to know the perfect thing to say that would calm him down and Monty wanted to help this person who he cared for so much that it genuinely frightened him.

She’d see her story and his as two versions of what a woman can do when faced with a system that doesn’t accept them as equals to men and that makes Monty want to burst–with rage or shame or some unidentifiable third thing that he can’t name–because the choices he made were not a workaround; not a way to cheat the system. They were a necessity.

Later she would tell herself that that was how she missed the subtle shift in the air, the imperceptible tilt of her world sliding off its axis.
"What?"
"Just… when she said we should have known who the body was… that's… what Colonel Bevan meant, right?" She glanced up. Monty had gone as still as a statue, leaning forward onto his elbows and staring directly at her.

“Hey, yous,” Ted steps through the threshold. “So, hey, when I said I could come pick you up for whatever, whenever, if you’d just dared to live a little, I didn’t mean at the ass crack of dawn on a goddamn Wednesday while I’m hungover, Petey.”
“What the fuck did you just say?” Officer Bailey interrupts.
“Oh, nothing, sir, all classy law-abiding topics of conversation here,” Ted says. “Hey, Petey, at least tell me you’re wasted off your ass and that this was all worth it.”
“I’m not,” Peter says, voice hoarse.
“Fucking useless.”
