Cassian scrubs a hand over his face. His mouth twists in a self-deprecating smile as he tells her, “There was a time that I wanted to leave the Rebellion. To go somewhere quiet and just. . .forget about it all. Save myself the pain.”
Jyn blinks. “You — what?”
“It was. . .a long time ago,” he clarifies, shaking his head with a small laugh. “Before I met you, before. . .everything. I was scared – it was right after Ghorman and I had already lost so much, I didn’t think I could do it anymore.”
“And now?” With the way her heart constricts in her chest and her face blanches, it’s a miracle that her voice remains steady. “Do you still want that?”
“Now. . .” he trails off, then licks his lips. “. . .I don’t know. We have to survive the coming days, first.”

There are numerous bodies at Spite's feet – bodies in various states of dismemberment – that he ignores in his scramble to get to Rook. When he finally gets there, he falls to his knees in front of her and reaches out to grip her upper biceps – a touch too tight. The rough movement rattles her brain and she bites down on her lower lip to stifle a groan of pain.
“Spite – “ she grunts, but doesn’t get out anymore before he interrupts her.
“They. Hurt you.” His wings flare out from his back in agitation, upper lip curling up to bare his teeth as he growls out the words.

She nods, not elaborating.
“I’m grateful, truly, but . . . “ he trails off, looking back at the body again. “Why?”
Her expression turns defensive. “If you knew how to hunt properly, you wouldn’t have tried to feed off of me,” she mutters, crossing her arms over her chest. “So I did the work myself.”

All honeyed words and compliments until you get me back in your bed for a lackluster night of mediocre sex.” She leans forward, practically hissing her next words, “So if that’s what you’re here for –– I’m. Not. Interested.”
He makes a show of spluttering in response but inwardly, he’s delighted by her coarse candidness. “I can assure you that a night spent with me will be anything but mediocre,” he purrs, voice dropping low. “But not to worry. I only seduce willing participants.”
