He´s known several sport stars in parties over the years, has been the notable host for many, but honestly? That's mostly for the press and the investors to eat up. (Football is a surprisingly effective starting conversation for business deals, actually, so he´s had his work cut out for him learning the whole shebang in that department.)

He finds a chunk of ice beside the lake and wraps it in a piece of flannel that he tears off of his shirt. It’s a dumb idea; he knows he’ll regret it, but if he doesn’t do something for Ellie’s pain he doesn’t think he’ll be able to live with himself any longer. So he presses it into her fingers, directs her hands to hold it against the angry bump on her head, and tries to pretend that means anything after what he’s failed to protect her from.
She’s so quiet. So passive. Joel almost feels like he shouldn’t be seeing it. Like she wouldn’t want him to be, if she wasn’t lost wherever she is, far from reality.

Joel wills himself to look at her hand before reacting; her finger, while bloody and needing stitches, is very much still on her hand. “No, baby, you didn’t cut off your fingers."
“I did, I did” she chants lightly. “I did. I cut off fingers. It's what I do. Ears, too. Like Monet. No? Van Gogh.” She looks at Jesse: expression blank, shaking shoulders, mouth in a soft frown. “The nose got real crooked. His eyes were closed, but they probably popped like raspberries.” Jesse’s face goes pale and he looks Joel’s way, silently begging for help. “No, wait. Grapes. Right? Do they pop like grapes, Joel?”
“Baby," his voice breaks as he watches her tremble and bleed. "Look at me, huh?” He shakes her a little, not having the heart to pinch her arm to try and bring her back. “Right at me. We’re gonna fix you up. Trust me.”
For a moment she stops shaking, eyes on him. Searching his face for a lie. Almost expecting it.
But he knows he only has himself to blame.
