Deflection was a skill he'd cultivated, a charming second skin that took praise and analyzed it for underlying motive before chewing it up and spitting it out like the rancid and untrue thing he knew any such flattery must be. By now, Wriothesley was an expert at fielding compliments without internalizing a single one.
