Kaeya raises an eyebrow and turns to her. “What’s this now?” His lips are perched in that pointed little smile he puts on when he’s teasing someone. “The Lady Gunnhildr interested in leaving Mondstadt? What has the world come to?”
She laughs, of course, because she’s had far too much punch to stop it, and because Kaeya’s smile—even this awful, teasing one that makes her the butt of his joke—is a wondrous thing.
“Well, I would— Of course I wouldn’t be the Lady Gunnhildr.”
“Certainly not if you were an adventurer,” he grins. “Where would you go first?”
“Somewhere I could sail to, maybe.” She sighs. “I couldn’t imagine living anywhere else, though. Could you?” And then, because the punch has made her mind work a little slower and it is already a difficult thought to think even when she is not inebriated, because Kaeya has more Mondstadt in him than anyone else she knows, “Again?”
They are friends, first and most, before there is something like love between them, accompanied by an acute awareness that they cannot risk the things they love most for this.

Summary
After her defeat at Enbarr, Edelgard is rescued by two strangers who help her escape to a recently conquered territory of Morfis. There she meets a resistance army that seeks the aid of a foreign power to fight the Morfisian occupiers. She immediately begins to plot her return to Fodlan to reclaim the Empire, but she is unexpectedly reunited with someone whom she never thought she would see again, and who poses a serious threat to her plans. At the same time, she is unwillingly drawn into the life of a strange city that leads her to question what she believes. Above all, her transformation into the Hegemon Husk has taken a terrible toll on her, and she will have to choose what she wants more before she dies: to return to her home, or to become fully human again.
