Maverick’s eyes lower to focus on the figure whose head barely reaches Copperhead’s hip, a blonde boy that looks to be around Bradley’s age. “And this must be Jacob.”
“Jake,” the boy corrects. He only crosses his arms when Copperhead taps his shoulder in a silent reprimand, but Maverick doesn’t seem to mind.
He laughs and exchanges an amused look with Copperhead before moving his hand into a similar grip on Bradley’s shoulder. “Well, Jake. It’s nice to meet you. I’m Maverick. This is Bradley.”
Bradley blinks owlishly at them both until Maverick nudges him. “Hi.”

“What’s goin’ on?” Jake asks, jabbing his fingers hard enough into Coyote’s ribs to prompt an inelegant yelp and open up enough space for him to jam his head into the conspiratorial knot of their friends.
“Trying to figure out the odds of Bradshaw being down to shave off the mustache for two hundred dollars,” Nat tells him, helpfully; if Bradley didn’t know better, he’d swear there was a note of mischief in her voice.
Jake visibly balks.
“Absolutely not,” he says, in a horrified tone.
“That’s what I said,” Fanboy says, over-serious. “No way he’s doing it for less than four hundred.”

“You’re a coward,” he said with finality.
Something shifted in Caleb’s expression. He looked incredulous, and something flashed behind his eyes—something Darem swore he had seen earlier when Jay-Den’s name came up. The difference was that before, Caleb had seemed to be holding himself back, stopping himself from saying something. Whatever had restrained him then was gone now.
A chill ran through Darem as the realization hit him that he had royally fucked up.

A story set on Ukeck during episode nine. Instead of mentioning his parents, Caleb decides to weaponize another one of Darem’s insecurities: his feelings for a certain someone.
