    Summary

"Hmm," I hum as new eyes start to begin to focus on us after Grace mentions marriage so clearly. It's difficult to be upset at them because, to be fair, I did agree to make that stupid secret pact with the rest of the Hail Mary crew that we all wouldn't attempt to initiate a romantic relationship with Grace.

There were two rules of this pact:

    1. Don't tell Grace or Stratt about the pact.
    2. No romantic interactions with Grace.

    This includes:...

I didn't read anything past that.

Star Trek AU/Crack where Rocky is ready to make Grace his mate, but this stupid "No Romancing Ryland Grace Pact" is yucking his yum.

"Hey, Rock. I thought about it some more and maybe....we should postpone our hang out."

I jump in the air, start saying a curse, abort it, and finally collect myself.

    "No."

"We spend almost every minute together Rocky. Are you really looking forward to it that much?"

    "Yes."

I keep my answers short to stop myself from yelling so loud that everyone on the Hail Mary hears.

"It wasn't going to be that special. And also," Grace folds his arms. "Maybe, everyone's right. Maybe we do spend too much time together."

I am starting to realize that I have been far too gentle to the other humans romantically interested in Grace. That stupid pact and that fucking groupchat is nothing but pure evil. My mind races as I come up with the perfect response for that cesspool.

"Does Grace enjoy spending time with Rocky?"

"Obviously, yes. It's just a lot, right?"

According to you or according to someone else? I whistle to myself. It would take too much time to de-tangle whatever 'therapists' are telling him about 'healthy boundaries'. I'd like to see them separate themselves from their best friend soon to be mate.

"Next free time, you can make plans with others. You already made plans with me. I decline your retraction."

Then Grace makes my favorite sound. He giggles. I love how airy and light it feels as the sound waves travel down to the tips of my claws.

    "Fair enough."

    Summary

“Nott. My friend.” Nott pretends her heart does not jump at that, just a little. Friends seemed like a concept that belonged solely in the past, up until recently, along with home and happiness and hope. “What are you doing?”

Caleb really is the most obtuse clever person Nott has ever known. “I’m making a flower crown.”

He seems almost bemused, watching her examine and pick her material.

    “Do Goblins weave flower crowns?”

    Probably not.

“I told you,” Nott says. “Everyone likes flowers.”

Nott is helpless against her smile. “Do wizards weave flower crowns?”

“No,” he answers, not looking up. “But I told you, I’m not a very good wizard. And I’m not very good at this either. I, ah – don’t remember how.”

“It will come back to you,” Nott says with a certainty that surprises even herself. “You always remember everything.”

He really does, Nott has noticed. Caleb can remember which paths they took through the forest, which farms they have already passed, what time of day it was exactly when they saw that Crownsguard patrol pass through the fields three weeks ago.

“Besides,” she waves her own failure of a wreath under his nose. “I suck at this, too.”

“You taught yourself how to pick locks,” Caleb points out, almost smiling. “You can figure this out.”

    Summary

One of Nott's cell mates steals something little and shiny and stupid, exactly the kind of thing that makes her fingers itch almost uncontrollably, and the guards make him pay for it in blood. She knows better than to get close to any of the other criminals in here, but she also knows the man on the ground might actually be too broken to hurt her. (She decides Caleb is her boy well before he knows it.)

Their cellmates wake up all at once and the rowdy man nudges the woman. "Holy shit! She really is gonna eat him!"

Veth expects them to come toward her, to try to make a fight of it, but they don't. The big man does, though, losing his usual casual air and suddenly giving her the sense that he might be the most dangerous thing in this cell. She gets instinctively to her feet, climbing between the man and Caleb and baring her fangs.

"If you're fuckin' eating people-" he starts, but she's already keyed up too far and he takes one step too close, setting her off.

Panic floods through her, both for herself and Caleb, and the fear takes her over, calling up instincts she still doesn't understand. She snarls and snaps her teeth in the open air and then screeches, "Stay back! Don't touch him! He's hurt!"

The man stops, his eyebrows shooting up. "You speak Common?" the half-elf woman blurts.

Behind her, Caleb shifts, only slightly, but enough that she can hear the movement. She glances backward at him, still panicked. "Hold still! You're hurt!"

"It is - alright," he says, his voice still rough and quiet. "I am - okay. Nott, I am - okay."

That's reassuring, but not reassuring enough, not when the big man takes another step in their direction. Nott wheels on him, snarling again. "Back!" she demands.

Caleb reaches across the ground and grabs her ankle, holding it gently. "Nott," he says, "Do not get yourself hurt for me."

"Then don't get hurt again!" she said, her voice a half-enraged howl.

    Summary

Grace’s short history of relationships taught him that maybe he was just childish. Maybe he just— maybe he didn’t want a relationship. Maybe he just wanted a best friend who wouldn't leave him when they got married. That he was the one that was the problem.

Adults had sex. That was a fact of life. They fell in love and love meant sex and that was just how it was. If you didn’t want to have sex then you weren’t really in love. Sure sex didn’t equate to love— people had flings all the time— but romance and sex were the kind of things that went together. So Grace had just— accepted the words of his girlfriends. That maybe he just never actually loved them the way he thought he did. Maybe he just liked them and tied the thought of romance to it so that he could monopolize their time. That all just came together so maybe he actually was just leading these women on. All of them gave him everything he needed in a relationship but he’d never been able to be what they needed. Wasn’t that selfish? Wasn’t that cruel?

Alternatively: Grace is alloromantic asexual. This is traumatizing in many ways. Not for Rocky though. Rocky's perfectly okay with being in love and never having sex.

“Oh, sorry, I was going to get you a fresh one,” the woman had seemed skittish, as if she was worried she’d stepped into some sad stood up woman’s denial session.

Marissa just smiled softly and said, “Its okay. I ordered it for my friend. He’s not coming but I want to keep it there.”

    “I see, sorry about that.”

It was then that Marissa was truly hit with the realization that Ryland had nobody else. She wasn’t close to him. He had no other friends. She was his phone one call. And he still hadn’t seen fit to tell her he was dying for the cause. Yet, Marissa understood. She had a whole list of people she’d have called before she called him. A whole list of names to pull if something happened, friends who knew her better.

Ryland had emailed her though. Called her. Every time. Until he didn’t. Clearly she’d meant so much more to him than he’d ever meant to her.

There was guilt, and for the first time she wondered if anyone had ever loved Ryland the way he deserved. If he’d given up on love because it had never seemed to want him. She wished she’d known him better— loved him more— she wished—- Time would keep moving though. Should have —would have— could have– and all that. So she’d remember him, She was the only person who could.

Court was hurting and needed to rest. Naturally he refused to do so and Ryland and Claire guilted him into it anyway. They switched from a motel to a hotel with adjoining rooms because Ryland agreed with Claire. She needed her own space. They ordered take-out and watched bad television. He bought a pack of cards and Claire dominated every game they taught her. Ryland was disconcerted by how good her poker face was but Court just looked impressed and proud of it.

But of course he did. His brother truly doted on the kid and she looked to him for approval at every corner. They were a matched set, the two of them, tied together as much by their differences as the things they had in common. When Ryland was being honest with himself, he knew he was envious of their bond. He'd had that kind of relationship with Court before he went to prison but it was severely damaged by the death of their father.

    Maybe not forever though.
