    Summary

“Truthfully,” Celebrimbor repeated, and carded his fingers through the part of Annatar’s hair which was still hanging loose. The body shivered at his touch. “You’ll have to forgive my heresy — I was young enough that I did not understand — but I thought it was a curse, for what we had done. An eternal, dim reminder of home.”

It was important to remember that Annatar had not shared this initial glimpse of the sun. He had not been impressed. He had walked underneath Yavanna’s famed Trees and scorned their imitation — he had never known true darkness aside from that uncountable period before song.

But if Annatar had seen the first sunrise — if he had not known Treelight — perhaps he would have thought that the light of the sun was stark and terrible. He might have compared it to the unclean white of bone. Marveled at the way it cleaved object from shadow and shrank the world.

Celebrimbor braids Annatar’s hair before a festival for the sun.
