Kumiko has been the assistant advisor for some time now, and she hasn’t shaken the weirdness of it yet. She wonders, somewhat, if she is ever going to. She’s closer in age to the kids she teaches than she is to her coworkers.

Reina likes touring. She likes seeing the world, and playing on stages to people who love her. She likes the bus, cramped and terrible as it is. She likes Calliope and her brashness, she likes the feeling of her trumpet under her fingers and the scant gay bars left in America, she likes living a life that is not what she would have expected, years ago, but which is her own nevertheless.

"Kumiko holds the book over the printer like she is an archeologist, like it is old and precious and irreplaceable, because, of course, it is.
Kitauji’s copy machine is nigh-unusable, so she’s taken a trip into the city, gone to the nearest office supplies store, and she’s now hunched over this thing with a songbook already thumb-smudged and wrinkled, but she won’t mess it up more than that. She refuses to do that."

Kumiko’s mind swirls and swirls all that evening, all during that walk home, and she very impressively manages not to cry – which she owes to the hot air, she thinks, to the sweat stealing all the water from her body – and heads inside and dodges Mamiko’s questions and heads back out into the hallway because she saw a package dropped off at the front of the building, she might as well pick that up, maybe if she moves more it will stop. There’s the box, there’s the clinical lighting of the place she’s called home all her life, it’s food or something for the fish probably, there’s art of a frog screen-printed on the side, she hefts it into her arms and prepares to take it back upstairs.
Because what did it mean, really, if for all of Reina’s talk of antiauthoritarianism, of being special and not caring what anybody else thought, she dropped Kumiko like a stone the moment she disagreed with her?

Nobody rides the bus to school - not with the trains there, and carpooling mothers if need be - and it’s a thing the band rents, Kumiko knows this now, because she had to be the one to book it. It takes a bit of the magic out of it, truth be told – this is a thing she could have at any time, had she a few tens of thousands of yen to spare, if she wanted to live lavishly.
Kumiko is more than happy to let Matsumoto direct everybody onto the bus, though. She’s done the groundwork, she will be a normal student just for now."

“I’ve always wondered,” Kumiko says, and Reina turns around.
