The familiar veil of shame comes down quickly and with it the last vestiges of control he has over himself evaporates. A sound comes out of him; a long, low wail like something gravely wounded and he backs away from her, presses his hand over his mouth. “You came back.” His voice is gravelly, as if he hasn’t spoken in months, only opening his mouth to inhale smoke and liquor.
Effie shrugs helplessly. “I couldn’t help it.”
