For a moment— maybe all of them even— it strangely reminds the former surgeon of the act of falling. And not just falling off a cliff or falling in love, but falling in general.
There's always been a great divide to him when patients so-often expressed personal griefs with acts of falling, equating them to failing or failure when they could be looked at as anything but. Still, no matter which act itself, no matter which way one actually fell, it always evoked a sense that— whatever was happening, was probably the most important thing that could ever happen.
He's got his eyes lost in the same thoughts as Amsterdam brings morning into early afternoon. His hand is on the door of a tiny little building when Will asks something before he can even get the thing halfway open.
"What are you smiling about?" It's soft.

Summary
Hannibal loves dangling the truth so close to others. Watching them reach for it in all the wrong directions as if they were blind and deaf and dumb to the reality of the world. Dropping hints with words and actions and smiling, shark like, as even that makes it no clearer to them. His ego is monstrous, and Will often considers himself lucky to be just as monstrous or he may have been consumed by it.
“Petty games suit you more than you’d like to admit.”
“I admit that I delight in them in ways I never have before. Perhaps I've found something worth being petty over.”
Will rolls his eyes but squeezes Hannibal's ankle softly. He already knows that he won't object, that he will be content to be sat and fed and fussed over in subtle enough ways to be dismissed while Hannibal directs his game expertly. That the residuals of guilt he feels will be examined closely but not felt viscerally. The heat of Hannibal's skin under his sock, real but out of reach of tactile sensation.
“Alright, sugar. When?”

"Then you won't." He tilts his head, the side of his neck stretching. Exposed. Will swallows and goes to look away, but Hannibal does not allow it. He catches Will's cheek, coaxing him back with a steel-soft hand, and runs his thumb tenderly along his jaw. Will is hot to the touch. Flushed with the blood of a fresh kill. "You won't, because you are a creature of free will. A work of creation steeped in horror and divine beauty… and you are my friend. I have enormous faith in you, Will."
Will confronts Hannibal at a critical moment, revealing some inconvenient truths about each other. What's to be done about that?

Will lifted his head and slowly stalked closer to him, an angry glare spread across his face now. “Evidently… not well enough.”
The tone of Will’s voice sent a subtle shiver down Hannibal’s spine. My wrathful angel.
“Have you told Jack Crawford?” he asked, keeping his face and tone neutral.
Will shook his head. “No.”
“Why not?”
“Because I was hoping it wasn't true.”
