Ilya had told Shane to leave because they needed space - they needed some room to catch their breath so they could talk about things properly. So they could say sorry and fix the mess they had made. But one day apart stretched into two, into three, into a week, and suddenly Shane was on the other end of the phone, saying, ”Maybe this isn’t going to work, Ilya.”
At least Ilya is good at that part; he’s an expert in being left behind.
(Or, Ilya and Shane breakup. Then the Centaurs’ plane almost crashes.)

Shane thinks this is probably the first - and last - time in his life that he’s ever been excited about grocery shopping. But it’s their first time doing it together, as a couple, out in public where other people can see them. Where, finally, they don’t have to pretend to be something they’re not.
It’s such a small thing - insignificant to most people, probably - but it’s a luxury Shane never thought he would be allowed to have.

“Actually I need your help. . . over here.” Ilya adds coyly. Shane shakes his head before he even enters the room, seeing, unsurprisingly, Ilya leaned against the doorframe holding the garland in both hands directly under the mistletoe.
“Is that so?”
“Hmm, yes. Yuna said she wanted it on the mantle, and I don’t actually know where that goes.” he adds, sobering a touch with his actual question, but it doesn’t last long. “But I need you to come over here and help me. It is very important. For Christmas.” he adds and starts twirling the end of the garland with one hand.
(ie. ilya is spending christmas with the hollanders for the first time and shane surprises him with misteltoe and ilya becomes a bit of a menace about it)

“How much longer?”
“I don’t know, probably like fifteen minutes?” he can hear Shane shrug through the phone.
“Hmm. . .” Ilya looks at Shane’s location where he’s watching him inch closer to their house on the map. “Phone says thirteen.”
“Are you watching my location?” Shane laughs from where he’s talking to Ilya through the screen in his car.
“Mmm, yes. I’ve been so miserable without my husband. I want you home.” he groans. “Now, preferably.” he adds and Shane huffs a laugh.
(ie. shane is on the way home from a work trip and talks to ilya the whole way home until they're finally reunited (plus a little glimpse into the future))
