Raleigh didn’t always know he was different.
He had a big personality, yes, and was friendly, yes, and was cocky, yes, but he was never a womanizer for the sake of it. His friends treated girls like trophies, and while Raleigh knew the steps, knew how to flirt with the girls who were pretty or who expressed interest in him, knew how to smile and smirk and flex and joke, he never went anywhere with it. He didn’t see the point. His friends and his fights and his books (of the comic variety, of course) and his brother were all good enough for him.

Cerrit escapes, is the only one to escape, what essentially became a floating bomb of fire and magical energy – and was only able to do so through the love and guidance of his friends. His friends… his friends who died making sure that he specifically would make it out, his friends who he called selfish (because they were, of course, they were, but he loved them anyway…) and silently (and loudly) judged for their ambition and hubris while he turned a blind eye to his own. The first of many blind eyes he turned.
His selfish, arrogant friends who, in the end, he saw and felt die in the most selfless, loving ways possible.
