Her Radiance was mysterious and private, but after over a decade in the city everyone knew of her two sons: Godard and Filoneus.
Sir Filoneus was away, fighting in Telmora or Argosia or somewhere quite a ways from home. He was barely 17. The elder son, Lord Godard, was rarely seen. The Photarch said he spent much of his time in meditation, communing with the Light. As such, he was almost never without his mother, and never outside of the confines of the Villa Aurora or the cathedral.

Lord Julien Davinos was expecting to wake up with the hangover of a lifetime. He'd drank himself to a stupor the night before, lost in his grief--fate was a cruel, cruel mistress, after all. It gave him the love of his life only after taking away everything he cared about. And then it snatched him away again: the cost of saving the world of Araman. A sacrifice he never would have agreed to, had he known.
He didn't wake up with a hangover. Instead, he woke up on the streets of Dol Makjar, hundreds of miles from where he'd blacked out. Maybe getting blackout drunk next to an assortment of spell arrays and strange glyphs wasn't a good idea after all.
Or maybe, he mused, it was the best idea of his life. Because there, at the end of the street ahead of him, was a very alive and very much not-undead Occtis Tachonis, led by a younger Lord Julien Davinos.

Summary
A few weeks earlier, House Tachonis had been wiped from Aramán in a single night, and every last member of the deranged bloodline had been butchered.
No one knew who—or what—had been powerful enough to commit such a slaughter. Some claimed the family had finally lost control of the undead army they had been secretly raising and that their own creations had turned upon their masters.
Others, bolder, speaking in hushed tones and only after making certain they could not be overheard, whispered of an estranged son returning to exact his vengeance.
But those stories were invariably met with scorn, since the idea that the only Tachonis born without sorcerous talent could have annihilated his entire family was laughable.
