"You are a ...." Ilya realized he did not know the English word, apart from the slurs he had heard thrown around in locker rooms and on the ice. Come to that, he was not sure he knew a Russian word for it that was not also half a slur.
"A carrier, yeah," said Shane. "Apparently."
"What do you mean 'apparently'? You didn't know?"
Shane shook his head. His eyes were open now, but he still did not look at Ilya. He stared at some distant point on the wall as if it had personally offended him.
"I never got tested. Mom didn't want it in my medical file, if I was. She didn't want another thing they could use against me. An excuse to -- fuck. They're never gonna let me play hockey again, are they?"

The word still feels too small. Too… simple. Like calling the ocean a puddle, like calling the sun a lightbulb. It doesn't capture even a fraction of what Ilya is to him, what they are to each other.
Shane wakes up next to Ilya and has some feelings about it.
