But the exertion had taken its toll on him nonetheless — because Albedo was real, corporeal, with hard elbow bones Kaeya could feel against his palm — and left him panting lightly. Kaeya was hardly starved for combat experience, and in his time he’d seen the face of bloodlust a thousand times, from battle-hungry rookies throwing themselves into death’s arms for the thrill of it, to seasoned professionals who treat killing like a sport. Albedo, beneath the flushed cheeks and the tousled hair, simply looked bored.

Varka doesn’t quite choke on his own saliva, but it’s a close thing. “Fifty what now?”
“Oh, don’t be like that,” Dori scolds with a shake of her head. “Anyone else would be asking for much more – it’s not every day you stumble upon a book this old and this useful too! A guide to courting for, ah, individuals specific to Nod-Krai and Snezhnaya? It’s practically a trove of information, Sir Varka! Really now, it’s only because you’re my most loyal, most esteemed, most valuable customer that I can afford naming such a low price.”
Or: Varka gets swindled into buying a Fae courting guide, written by a human for other humans. He's also forced to come to terms with his own feelings regarding a certain Lightkeeper (who might or might not be Fae). Shenanigans ensue as he attempts to follow this dubious yet somehow effective guide to the very end.

Summary
As a nearly perfect imitation of human life, Albedo has always had a natural inclination to study other people. By far the most interesting subject he’s discovered is Kaeya, his commoner friend who doesn’t seem to care at all about Albedo’s royal title or status. But Kaeya has motivations of his own, and certainly isn’t as innocent as he appears beneath his charming smile. Together, Kaeya and Albedo each hold one half of the only mystery that can set the kingdom of Khaenri’ah back on the right path, although it’s certain that the answers they will find will destroy both of them.

“What did you just say to me?” Kaveh demands in Common, because someone has to play the straight man in this tragedy and for once, it will not be him.
Alhaitham turns a page. “I said,” he repeats smoothly, still in the dialect, “that your citations are structurally unsound, emotionally driven, and—if I’m being generous—historically masturbatory.”
One of the interns chokes audibly on his coffee. Another whispers, “Did he say masturbatory?” in an accent not native to anywhere known on the continent.
Kaveh’s chair screeches against the marble. He stands.
“Fine,” he says, in perfect, archaic Inazuman. “If we’re playing this game, then allow me to remind you that I studied abroad, you glorified footnote. You want to throw sand at me? I’ll drown you in calligraphy.”
Or, perhaps emotional repression is just another dialect they’ve both grown fluent in.

He decides to stay behind through the night to fix them, but gets ambushed by leftovers of the Eremites and dragged across the desert. He gets nearly assaulted, thrown off a cliff, impaled on a tree, stabbed, and shot, and all the while can't stop thinking about Kaveh. Kaveh slaps a hand to his cheek in mortification. "I'm not! What would I be embarrassed about?"
"You just became the embodiment of a basic romance novel trope. You're flustered. You just got troped."
Kaveh groans and wishes he dared to get up and walk out of the cafe, but alas, his unpaid tab would haunt him both morally and financially. "To be part of a romance novel I would have to be in love."
"Well, I think your crush on Al-Haitham is enough to put you in the category," Tighnari says simply.
Kaveh's mouth falls open. On the table, a little potted plant mirrors his movements, sprawling leaves opening wide in shock. "What makes you think I have a crush on Al-Haitham?" he asks a little incredulously.
Tighnari opens his mouth and closes it, and then opens it again. "Oh dear," he says.
Kaveh meets Al-Haitham in the Akademiya, and it ruins his life from that point forward.

It was a snippet from a tale that was long-lost to time. It was already over. Nothing can be done to change it. Yet, the funny thing about tales and stories is, that they always find a way back to reality.
Or, to help Kaveh find new inspiration for his upcoming work, Alhaitham suggests embarking on a journey through the forests of Sumeru to the endless desert of King Deshret.

This is a Kaveh whose smile comes as easy as a breeze, who laughs with his adoring colleagues and remains oblivious to Alhaitham's appearance at the doorway.
The Kaveh who whines about his keys, threatens to duplicate said keys, and manages to never remember to do so exists far from the Akademiya.
That is the Kaveh Alhaitham is used to. So much so that catching sight of this side of his roommate, the Light of Kshahrewar in his sun-stained office—broad shoulders and dangly earrings, perfectly tanned—makes him almost hesitant to enter.
For the first time, Alhaitham feels out of place, rather, he feels uncomfortable with the thought of sticking out like a sore-thumb in the dazzle of the room.

Summary
Kaveh used to think that Alhaitham had mastered the art of ignoring him. The man would remain unflappable as he continued to read his worn copy of The Origins of Enkanomiyan Language, even when Kaveh was a hair’s breadth away from shattering the windows of their house with his severity of pitch.
No amount of screaming, threats to throw things, or violently waving in front of him could get Alhaitham to pause in his thirst for knowledge. As it turns out, Alhaitham literally just turns his hearing aids off so he doesn’t have to listen to Kaveh.
It’s for this exact reason that Kaveh has decided to learn Sumerian Sign Language.
