“No, no,” Ray tries reversing course, fingers flexing against Pete’s spine. “I just…I didn’t wanna assume—or maybe assume’s not the right word—I didn’t think—you were so sad, Pete, and I—“
Pete’s looking at Ray like he’s grown three heads, like he’s gone honest to God, batshit crazy.
“You were hurtin’, Pete, so bad, and I didn’t wanna act like everything was fine.” Ray pauses for a moment before meekly adding, “And you deserve space from me if you want it.”
