It almost looked dismissive, except that she said it with such naked longing in her voice and a faraway expression on her face like she could still hear him now. “He even got some of them.”“Was it worth it?” Cheimin said. When Char Aznable and Amuro died, the sky was awash with strange, eerie light, and people said it was a miracle. Cheimin had seen it too, and it had been beautiful, but she couldn’t look up at it for too long without dust getting in her eyes, so she’d put her head back down and helped her mother change a tire, and the miraculous light didn’t seem to make much difference. She and her mother and the Earth had survived, and she was grateful for it, but they had survived in a world that only ever seemed to get a little bit crueler and more desolate every day.
Hathaway's death hadn't warranted a miracle.
