He cranes his neck over the backrest of the couch, trying to sneak a glance at Renjun. His best friend is sitting at the living room table, open hands hovering over his homework as he stares blankly at Donghyuck.
“I think Mark is probably the nicest dude on the planet, and you’re just a fucking asshole.”

“Might as well.” Ronan said, eyes bright and catching constellations, rose peaked cheeks from brisk winds, sniffling still, eyes creased and underlined in echoes of painted twilight.

The closer it got, the more Adam's chest would twist and the faster his heart would beat. A bead of sweat would break out on his forehead by the time it began growing taller and taller, reaching spindly pieces of blackness towards his frozen, shaking, dangling hand. When it touched him, he could feel Ronan’s pulse beneath his hands with haunting accuracy. Not the quickened pulse that came with bare skin-kisses-maybeidreamtyou’s, but the kind of pulse that had been accompanied by blood-bruises-screaming-ganseywakeup’s.

When Adam struggles with sleep at Harvard, his brain begins to doubt that the demon is really gone and makes him relive attacking Ronan each night. Neck deep in it, and convinced he's gone insane, Adam drives back to Henrietta in search of help.

Adam hadn’t spoken to Ronan in almost a year. The breakup had not been amicable or mutual. Ronan did not understand and wouldn't hear him out, and Adam had run out of patience. It had been messy. They hadn’t had any contact since. Their mutual friends never said his name around Adam. He assumed it was the same on Ronan’s end. They all had an unspoken agreement of avoidance and pretending none of that ever happened.

"Not with you distracting me," Adam snapped, "It not being ready to drive to Cambridge isn't an option."
"It actually is since there's a perfectly good car you can take here, or you could let me dream you a shitbox that can move its ass."
"I'm not taking your car," Adam said for the thousandth time.

He missed the magic, filling his veins and his breath and his mind, letting him disconnect from being whichever Adam Parrish he was being called upon to be, and find community with everything else on the ley line that lived and moved and breathed and loved and wanted.
