“Yes? What is the matter?” The toll the day has taken on him must have roughened his sense of courtesy, because Arthur hears himself reply in a harsher way than intended. Rafferty is, after all, perhaps the one person whose presence he can bear at this time. In front of him, Arthur doesn’t feel the need to neither polish nor humble himself for acceptance.
“Mr Guinness.” Rafferty enters the office with two fresh bottles of black stuff — both necks nestled between his right hand’s fingers — and promptly offers him one.
Arthur stares at the extended hand for a moment, a frozen apology in mind. Only as he stands up he allows his eyes to meet Rafferty’s, to uncover a gentleness there that anyone else would deem out of place but Arthur has known for the longest time.
