The world threw his brilliant Wei Ying away, but Lan Wangji loved him and always will, even when he'd hit his absolute lowest. It'll just have to be enough.

Summary
Sizhui whimpers and begins to bite at Lan Wangji’s neck, murmuring pleas into the skin, thighs tensing and squeezing beneath his light summer robes that are slowly becoming drenched with sweat and- and slick.
“Please, a-die, baba, it hurts, help me, help me,” their a-Yuan begs, too young to even know what is happening to him.
He wipes the tears from his face, and locks eyes with his husband. Neither of them have to debate the moral ethics of the situation, or which of the two paths in front of them would make them the worst parents. This will change their relationship with Sizhui forever, but at least he won’t be a hollow omega, spending the rest of his life searching desperately for something to fill the void that was created during an empty first heat.

When Zheng Bei asks, Gu Yiran moves back to his place. It feels like a big deal, somehow. Bigger, anyway, than it had the first time. Back then it had been a matter of necessity, of simple logistics. This time, it’s a choice.
He is quiet on the drive back to Zheng Bei’s, his tongue thick and heavy with the burden of gratitude, and with fear. What the fuck is he doing? Life has never been kind to him when it comes to this, when he tries to let down his guard and rely on people. Why should this time be any different?
It feels very, very different.

It reminds Lan Jue, oddly, of the zongzi. There had been so many young men clamouring for his attention, his patronage – each of them more lavish and overinflated in his expectations than the last. Zhang Ping had arrived with a basket of zongzi simply as a thank you, nothing more. The sincerity had been almost aching. Lan Jue feels that now, as Zhang Ping thanks him. It makes something flutter in his stomach, a sensation like flower petals buffeted by the wind.
OR: Three years after the downfall of the Dowager Empress, Zhang Ping returns to the capital to take up a new position. Lan Jue is forced to reckon with the fact that Zhang Ping may not have been the only one responsible for his numerous near brushes with death.

Slowly, Lan Jue traces the petal-style rim of an enameled bowl with his thumb. It is still light outside, the sun only starting to set. The dulling daylight washes over Lan Jue’s bright robes, so that he gleams like a pearl in the unlit room. All of his movements are smooth, deliberate as a courtesan’s – he has trained himself to be immaculate at all times. It makes Zhang Ping itchy, sometimes, his perfection. He wants to rumple him, to wrinkle his clothes and tangle his hair. To see Lan Jue streaked in flour, smelling of warm dough.
Or: Two years after the red mist descended, Lan Jue visits Yiping to assess its magistrate. He finds precisely what he was looking for.
