This story is for @Chandyowlet, who was the winning bidder on my 2025 Fandom Trumps Hate fanfic auction. The request was for an exploration of the risks and consequences for gay men serving in the US military in the mid-1990s — peak season of the infamous “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy that resulted in so many dishonorable discharges for the ‘crime’ of being queer. Ash and Tonio burst into my brain to tell their story; I adore these two, and I hope you’ll all enjoy their journey through darkness and toward the light 💛

15/10. Six chapters, three timelines, expertly interwoven. This one HURTS. 1990s, military, DADT, miscommunication, anger, separation. Shining moments of happiness but the shadows are never far. When they’re finally both free they have a lot to work through. Perfectly constructed, the characters are believably rendered across 22 years, so fascinating to put the pieces together as you read.

15/10. Another klikandtuna story that hits just right. Characters that you care about immediately, but make you fall even more in love with them every time they reveal a new layer of themselves. Descriptions that put you right there—in a boardinghouse on the prairie in 1949, coming up on winter. Enough sorrow and angst and misunderstandings to make the resolution and fluff and happiness meaningful. About as close as you can get to perfection in seven chapters.

13/10. I’ll just basically copy my comment here: Absolutely lovely and heartwrenching finale to this sweet series. The levity provided by Toffee the cat, and the distance provided by Brian’s “present, but out of the way” POV, and the strong sense of community and love throughout, makes it all (just about) bearable. If there had to be an end, this is the perfect one. (ALTHOUGH. Be warned, by many definitions this is NOT a happy ending…. But it’s about as close as you can get in the real world. Bring tissues.)

He thinks about the fish he watched dart along the length of the hull and the candy floss pink clouds framing the setting sun. He tries to remember what it was like to see the world as a wonderful thing to explore instead of a gray box he lives in.

13/10. Fun Below Dexks AU, everyone’s sleeping with everyone else and there’s an intriguing new guy in the mix. The boat is rented for private parties by the week in the BVI, so there is an entertaining lineup of vaguely familiar passenger groups. Light angst due to lack of communication, lots of smut once they get going, an accidental outing but it’s okay. Gabriel’s a good guy, just dense. Seems like an ideal lifestyle for the twentysomething crowd! More of an emotional hit than you’d expect. Sweet ending.

12/10. Fascinating and incredibly well-researched post WWIi queer subculture setting. Actually dangerous to be gay at the time, so a whole secret language and underground community evolved. Very compelling story of two couples who try to discreetly form a nontraditional family household and live their lives being as true to themselves as they can. Angst is mostly from outside forces and (fairly reasonable) worries about getting caught. Smut is mostly suggestive. Ends hopefully.
