    Summary

The sorceress levels him with a stern look that he returns defiantly, keeping his chin raised and his eyes trained on hers. It hits her then, who this child reminds her so thoroughly of, and she feels a wave of exasperation followed by giddy glee at the fate that befell the bard before her. If her hunch is correct, then the child is none other than the Master Bard Jaskier.

When Yennefer comes across a seven-year-old Jaskier, filthy and starving in the woods, she takes him back to Kaer Morhen to help him recover and also figure out who cursed the bard and how to fix it before it's too late and he's stuck reliving his entire life.

    Summary

Yennefer saves Jaskier. They bond - sort of.

     ---
She notices something familiar in the curve of his mouth just before she turns away. Begging Melitele for it not to be true, she moves closer to a dying man and looks at his face. His nose is broken and his skin is covered with a layer of old blood, but now she sees his bright blue eyes, sees the echo of the familiar features in his gaunt face.

“Jaskier,” she calls, and he closes his eyes.

    Summary

Even in the dim light, he can see that Jaskier is absolutely covered in blood. His clothes are splattered with it, his face is streaked, there’s even blood in his hair. His arms are slick and saturated up to the elbow and the sharp, polished blade Geralt had given him before he went into the cave is still gripped tightly in one fist like he can’t let it go. His knees are drawn up to his chest like he’s trying to make himself very small and aside from his quiet, hitched breathing he doesn’t move at all.

Jaskier blinks at him and his expression crumples just slightly as he stifles back a sob. “I killed them.”

(Or Jaskier is forced to kill in self-defense and does not handle it well. Geralt helps him pick up the pieces.)

    Summary

A muscle twitches in the witcher’s jaw. He clears his throat. “We recently… reunited. He and I used to travel together.”

“And the moment I can get out of this storm, we will cease ‘traveling together’ once more,” Jaskier says bitterly. Traveling together. Ha. Geralt makes it sound like they were nothing more than acquaintances on the road.

To him, Jaskier supposes it was. Unfortunately, Jaskier’s own heart and mind never received the memo.

Nivellen raises his brows, glancing between them. “Ah. I’ve… prodded something, haven’t I?”

“There is nothing between us to prod. There never was,” Jaskier insists. “Continue your game. I rather enjoy watching Geralt lose.”

    -----

Or, Geralt had never called Jaskier a friend, not once in their twenty years traveling together. Now he returns to uproot Jaskier's life, Child Surprise in tow and mentions of an 'old friend' on his lips. It makes Jaskier want to scream.

“Still a pity I wasn’t the one to make wishes on that djinn’s account. These tournaments would be so much more enjoyable without him.” Jaskier scoffed.
