Summary
It is dusk, during the mild early nights of the fallow season, and we— 1.0 and I— are playing Keep Away with the Mensah children when 1.0 abruptly utters, "This unit's critical components have reached their designated life expectancy," and drops like a stone.
Then it says, "WHAT THE FUCK."
Three has to hit the reset switch on a forced-obsolescence process. The switch is in an extremely inconvenient place inside Murderbot. Like, wrist-deep.

Summary
Most of the code I write is code that I can evolve on the fly. My code to delete me out of security footage, for instance, was something I'd built up over months, adjusting it to different proprietary SecSystems as I encountered them. But this was different: my comm and feed protections were what kept me from falling under anyone else's control, and I couldn't afford to have them be anything but perfect, which was why I was here. If I wanted to fix this vulnerability properly, and I did, there were things that I needed to do that I couldn't do without help.
-
In the aftermath of getting hacked, Murderbot asks ART to help it make sure it can't be hacked the same way again. As it turns out, applying and testing a security patch is a little more challenging than usual when the vulnerable system is, you know, your own brain.

Summary
"Transport, what happened here?"
I consider saying that I wish I fucking knew. I discard that potential response as unproductive.
-
An annotated excerpt from ART's personal memory files. After being reinitialized, ART repairs its systems, eavesdrops on its inhabitants, and tries to figure out what exactly happened while it was deleted.
