Garcia doesn’t look up from the screen. “It means I can take the first twenty-four hours.”
Santos’s brain is so fried that Garcia might as well be speaking a foreign language. “Of what?”
Brown eyes flit up to hers. “Your recovery,” Garcia answers like it should be obvious. “You can stay with me tonight and we’ll figure it out from there.”
She says it all without batting an eyelash, and is silent for so long afterward that Santos has time to gather more energy.
“What the f-uck,” Santos all but pleads, “are you talking about?”

Her name is Vaelus – this, she remembers – and her sister had freckles, maybe, and her mother screamed as she died, and the halls of her family are empty and dark. She has a part to play in this story, and she wishes, wishes, wishes oh so desperately that it could be one that would forgive her sins, that it could be one that would allow her to make up for it all.
She swallows her grief like water.
By now, she has gotten used to it – the coldness and the heavy weight upon her shoulder – and yet she doesn’t think she ever will. By now, she is beginning to grasp what the word ‘grief’ – rotten and bitter in her mouth – fully means. By now, what's left of her family has begun to make plans, desperate ones, to somehow find meaning in life other than pain, to return the world, their world, back to what they loved so dearly.
Vaelus cares in the sense that she would do anything, at this point, for no reason at all.
For whom then, if not for them and not for her mother either?
For nobody, she thinks. For herself.
