There’s some chattering; Susan’s stern voice changing in a way it takes John a moment or two to place. A moment or two for him to realize that she sounds afraid. Though John can count on one hand the things that scare Susan Grimshaw and half of those things he has never seen for himself. Then there’s a crash, shouting. Hosea’s hoarse voice calling out from the balcony of the crumbling mansion and John’s heart skips a beat.

“Abby!” She tries again, even as she can barely catch her breath. “Abby, please! Please!”
The last sight she gets before there’s cloth over her eyes is Abby standing over Joel, still unmoving and silent, a pistol in her hand aimed right for his head.
Then a blindfold is over her eyes, and the only awareness she has is the sound of a gunshot.
The sound has barely faded before she replaces it with a scream.

Joel carries him into the living room, where the Legos are back in their bins and there’s a little block of a room with no roof and Shimmer wedged in it on the coffee table. Joel doesn’t put JJ down; he thinks about those words he told Rafa, about how much harder they cling to their babies because of the ones they’ve already lost, and he sinks down into the couch with JJ still pressed against him. He sits there in the silence of the storm, with the wind banging a little on the shutters and the fire crackling in the hearth and the bubble of the soup a muted hum at the back of his mind. He closes his eyes and remembers to breathe- remembers that he’s sixty seven years old and that there’s little else in this world he finds more comforting than having his babies close and safe and warm.

Summary
Being told to shut up always hurt. More than he suspected it should. Soap once had drunkenly apologized to Gaz for being such a loudmouth, and when Gaz insisted that everyone liked his friendly chattiness, Soap had literally flopped over him in relief and confessed that being told to shut up was like being kicked. No other insult or fight had the same effect on him.
Except, perhaps, being called useless.

When Price finally takes the glass away it quivers in his hand. “There we go. It’s alright Soap,” he says quietly, wetly. One clammy hand comes up to press to his hot forehead. “You’re alright. Just take it easy, son.” The word comes out choked, like a confession drawn out of him by a higher power.
Price is just a man; a scared, confused old man, and God is not supposed to die in hospital rooms but nonetheless, there sits his corpse.
Price has a god complex, Soap wants a Father, and the world crashes down around them regardless of what either of them want. This is their relationship spanning from Modern Warfare 1 to Modern Warfare 3
