Summary
The first time Trent’s ever attracted to someone is in 1984. Most of the other boys in his year are already talking about fancying various girls in the neighborhood and how good looking Samantha Fox and other Page 3 girls are. Trent doesn’t share their interest, yet another way he doesn’t fit in with the other boys. One weekend Trent’s parents travel north to Manchester so his father can speak at a medical conference and for the first time Trent’s allowed to stay home by himself. His parents let him pick a couple of movies to rent from their local video shop and leave him with enough leftovers to last at least a week. On Friday night Trent presses play on an American film from the 70s called Smokey and the Bandit and suddenly all the ways the boys at school talk about feeling for pretty girls makes sense. Only it’s not Sally Field making Trent’s heart flutter but Burt Reynolds, his mustache, and his cowboy hat.
