Alysa hates Isabeau.
Ok, that’s not entirely true. Truthfully she loves Isabeau. The younger girl was a perfect mix of little sister and best friend and Alysa felt fiercely protective over her in a way that surprised even herself. Even though Isabeau was younger and seemed to be in a constant good mood, she could be serious when needed and seemed to possess some magic superpower to always know what was going on in Alysa’s head.
However, that didn’t mean that sometimes Alysa didn’t hate it.
In fact, after today Alysa made a mental note to train her poker face. At the end of the day though, it wasn’t Alysa’s fault for being so readable. It wasn’t even Isabeau’s fault for noticing. No, when all was said and done it was all really Amber’s fault.

Mira moved like she was underwater. She had pulled the melody straight from memory, from Rumi’s humming, from the way the lyrics had clawed their way into her chest and embedded itself in her heart.
Every motion, every step felt distant, disconnected- like she was watching herself from somewhere outside her own skin.
She danced for everything she hadn’t said.
For the guilt she couldn’t shed.She thought it might be a sort of twisted way of coping but she needed to do it.
It was her penance.
OR
The 3 times Mira over hears Rumi singing Free in different moments and the one time Zoey does. The words reopening wounds and guilt inside them. So Mira deals with it the only way she knows how, she dances, diving deep into her regret and emotions as she learns how to accept and forgive herself. Rumi and Zoey is there for her.

She learned it in the way her mother’s eyes glazed over whenever she entered the room, only to sharpen with venom if she lingered too long. She learned it in the way her father’s suitcase was never fully unpacked, always halfway to gone. She learned it in the way her brother, the golden boy, never said her name unless it was to tattle, to scold, or to spit it like a curse.
She learned it in the silence between dinner clinks and the muffled arguments behind closed doors, in the cold rice that waited for her after everyone else had eaten. In the echoing thud of her mother’s voice slurred over soju:

Mira watched on silently. Zoey’s face scrunched, tears streaking down her cheeks, “We can’t- Rumi, you’re a demon. And you hid it from us?” her voice pitched up slightly at the end of her sentence.
She wanted so badly to look away from her grief stricken friends.
Rumi took a couple of steps forward. Too fast. Mira shifted quickly, arm shooting out in front of Zoey to block Rumi from her.
To protect Zoey from Rumi.
Like she was dangerous.
Like she’d hurt Zoey.
Like she’d hurt either of them.
