Summary
Holland was so heartbreakingly obvious, Jack almost felt bad for him. Sometimes, the urge to take pity and swoop down—grab Holland by the tie, or the colorful lapel—and just plant one on him was almost too strong to bear.
But he couldn’t be sure whether Holland wanted him because he wanted him, or if it was because Jack was already there, steady and useful and safe. If it was only because of that, then it wasn’t worth the risk of losing the good thing they already had going, no matter how much Jack wanted him, too.

Summary
I’m the only one that knows, Bailey realized. He tilted his head back, closing his eyes into the warm sunlight, a broad brushstroke of gold sweeping over his face and down his throat. Freckled arms stretched in a puddle of sun, a lazy smile danced over his face. His eyes were closed, red lashes against his cheeks. Bailey always liked it better when his eyes were open. He thought about how cold it would be, six feet under the sand, and Bailey tipped his head down, shadowing his face again with the brim of his hat.

Faden sighed, tilting Bailey's head back with the palm pressed into his cheek, exposing the long line of Bailey's throat like a bone. "You've been looking for something to worship," he said quietly. "Why don't you show me some devotion, and I'll think about taking you to Heaven."

“I think I’m over it,” Faden said.
Bailey reached over his side and then offered a second beer out to Faden. “Yeah?” he said.
The can cracked open with a hiss, and Faden took a drink. “Mm,” he said, chugging. Then, “Yeah, the whole, time-loop thing. Like, I was thinking, and then I thought--who cares?”
“Who the fuck cares?” Bailey agreed.

Summary
“So, what now? We keep catching coaches from shithole to shithole?”
A mosquito pricks Ryan’s neck and he smacks it away. He thinks about the weight of Naim’s head on his shoulder on the bus, the tinny melodies emitted by cheap earphones filling the space between them. Remembers how settled he’d felt, how uncertain yet still oddly calm, having only the vaguest idea where he was going but being sure about who he was going with. He looks at Naim. “Maybe, yeah.”

Summary
There were times after Rocky moved into the Hail Mary when Grace would be hunched over an experiment, struggling to make things work; struggling to find the solution that Tau Ceti held, then struggling to grow nitrogen-resistant Taumoeba faster. Sometimes he would sit staring at the farm-tanks, slouched in his chair with his hands dangling over his knees, and whisper to himself. “Please,” he would say. “Please, please, please.”
“Who is Grace talking to?” Rocky had asked in the stilted way he’d been stuck with at the time.
“No one,” Grace had shrugged. “Or anyone. Anyone who’ll listen.”
Rocky does not understand humans. But now, he sits on the shore of an infant sea, a brand-new constructed world all around him just waiting for its single lonely occupant to take control of it, and wonders if human senselessness is worth a shot.
“Please,” he whispers, running his claw through the water. “Please, please, please.”
The sea does not respond.
Or, what if your friend accidentally catches the attention of a god in hopes of saving you, and that god falls in love with you instead?
