That was good, right? Alex, smiling. Eddie was so out of practice in this sort of thing. And even when he had been in practice, he was a disaster at flirting and dating and not having a mental breakdown at the mere idea of commitment. But Alex was smiling at him and joking with him and she hadn’t run off screaming. Yet.
That was as good an omen as anything.
Eddie mustered up all his courage. “Would you like to get dinner with me?”

“I love you,” Eddie said, and for the first time in his life uttering those words to a significant other didn’t feel like an albatross across his neck.
It was the opposite, really; it felt like Eddie had been shouldering the weight of the world these last 34 years, and he was now, finally, free.
“You do mean romantically, right?” Buck asked, visibly nervous.
“Yes, I mean romantically.”
“Cool,” Buck said, clearly trying not to panic. “Cool, cool, cool, cool.”

“She said she wasn’t worried about us breaking up.”
Oh. Well. That was pretty definitively a thing that people said about partners who were together romantically.
“Say something,” Buck instructed.
“What?”
“Anything,” Buck said, his voice wavering on the word. Which was—it was weird, right? Why was Buck so shaken by a throwaway comment?
Or maybe the better question was why wasn’t Eddie? If either of them was going to get freaked out by the assumption that he was dating a man, it would make more sense for it to be Eddie, who was straight, and not Buck, who had, in fact, already dated men.
“Aren’t you going to be late for your shift?”

Chris’s gaze bounced between them, his eyebrows so high they disappeared under his bangs. “Is this a dream? Am I still asleep?”
“No,” said Eddie, toweling his hair off next, while Buck watched him, speechless. “But we can talk more about it in the morning.”
“It’s okay if it’s not okay,” Buck said, far too loudly for the quiet hallway. Both Diazes snapped their heads to look at him, as if he being the weird one. “We can break up. Whatever you want.”
“Buck!” Eddie gave him an offended look that Buck ignored, because one of them needed to make sure they did this right. “What the hell?”

Eddie glanced over at Buck. "Was that how it was with Tommy?" Eddie asked, still a little breathless. He didn't dare wipe his lips, the taste of Buck still lingering.
Buck shook his head. "No," he admitted quietly. "It's never been like that with anyone."
Eddie Diaz was a proud man, which was why his grin didn't falter. "In a good way, I hope?"
Buck's expression turned dreamlike, and before Eddie could register, Buck was leaning in, initiating the kiss this time.
Eddie allowed himself to melt into it. He could feel Buck's hand wrapping around the smooth of his neck, his other hand coming up, his thumb rubbing soothing circles just underneath his ear. Eddie had never been so fucking content in his life
