In a bout of masochistic impulse, you look at him, really look at him. He’s fiddling with the handle of his mug, eyes landed on a fantasy point in the distance. You’ve gotten so used to his absence, talking to the shadows, the specters perpetually floating around you, that having a physical presence to take up the negative space is jarring.
“So,” you begin. Suguru looks up, looks at you, finally. “Miss me?” You’re aiming for sarcastic but it comes out mean.
“Yeah.” He says easily. Reaches for a sugar packet, pauses, aborts the motion halfway. “Do you?”

Keiji is nineteen and loving Bokuto is kneeling before a shrine. Rice digging into his knees, sandalwood and cypress smoke curling around him, bells chiming in the maple trees. The kami laugh in Bokuto’s voice, quicksilver and bergamot and midday moon. Keiji doesn’t pray for anything. He places his heart among the offerings and backs out of the shrine.

What Kuroko did right in high school (Kagami) and what he did not (Kagami).
If given the chance he would shove Kagami up against a wall and kiss him until they were both sick. Kagami would be wearing skinny jeans, the pair he always packs for Tokyo with the metal chain threaded through the belt loop, and Tetsuya would tug on that belt loop with two fingers while he leaned up into the warmth of his body, dizzy with wanting. If asked to, Tetsuya would throw away all the cigarettes in the world in exchange for that single, seamless painting of salvation: Kagami’s glassy eyes, his wind-blown smile, the golden patina of his skin.
